Caterham is making a new sportscar. But we can't tell you what it is, because you haven't designed it yet.

The British sportscar company has made its name by producing the Super 7 of Lotus fame long after Lotus had moved on. They've made a whole basketful of versions since, but it all boils down to that bare-bones, long-nose, cabin-over-rear-axle design. The format has legions of faithful fans around the world, but Caterham is preparing to move on with a second range to accompany the 7, and is opening up the design process to user submissions. The project is being undertaken in conjunction with Project Splitwheel, an open-source collaborative project that seeks to combine the efforts of gearheads around the world into one resource. Interesting idea, and Caterham is committed to producing at least a working prototype of the final design. The project kicks off in January, with the first prototype scheduled to debut sometime in 2010. Follow the jump to watch a brief explanatory video, or the link to Splitwheel's website for more info.

When I think of light bulbs, I think of how hot they are, how they give me light at night, and how easy they are to break! From Joonhuyn Kim, displayed at the 2008 100% Design Tokyo, here is "Flat Bulb." Better for stacking and shipping, no rolling away on you, and the best: aesthetically ironic. Simply fantastic!

But why not make a bulb with a whacky new shape, you may ask? Well, let me tell you, we discussed this sort of thing way back a few weeks ago when we spoke about the [LED Light Bulb]; at length. The truth of the matter is: light bulbs that are innovative, cheap, energy efficient, and every wonderful thing you can imagine, still sells less units than the bulbs with the classic light bulb shape, by a lot!

So, lets see if a certain blue-and-yellow Swedish "home products retailer" picks this design up so I can just hop on over to the Mall of America and pick one up! Or better yet, a bunch.

EDIT: Originally this post was titled "Flat Lightbulb Solves all Benjamin Franklin's Problems with Two Cuts" until our friendly CEO Jason told me that it makes much more sense to use the inventor of the light bulb for the title, not the harnesser of electricity. Thus Thomas Edison replaces ol' Ben.

微软终止Windows 3.x销售

BBC报道，11月1日微软宣布终止发放有18年历史的Windows 3.x系统的许可证。 Windows 3.x是微软的第一款图形用户界面的操作系统，于1990年代初推出，100%兼容更古老的MSDOS程序，运行需要8086/8088或以上处理器，至少需要640K内存，7M硬盘空间。也许你会惊讶于现在还有人使用如此古老的软件，但显然Windows 3.x还是能从嵌入式系统中找到容身之地——如收银机和部分远程运输客机的飞行娱乐系统，像维珍和澳洲航空公司都有。考虑到Linux在嵌入式领域具有很强的实力，微软终止Windows 3.x销售也许能推动向Linux的迁移。

一个很有意思的挂钩，应该可以用来挂衣服，挂包等日常需求！还有就是它的环保性是不是值得你去学习与模仿呢？之前在自己的工地到是看到过工友拿这样的装备来挂挂工作服之类的东东！也没想现在却成了一件风尚家具装饰小挂件了！

亲历加拿大小学的创收

中小学"创收"，是很熟悉的事情。从莫明其妙的校办工厂到花样繁多的收费项目，怎么一个层出不穷了得。移民加拿大，惊喜地发现：原来加拿大小学也创收！

我遇到的这个创收的小学，是加拿大安大略省西南部小镇上的一所新学校。学校规模不大，设备极新极全，从大厅一样的图书馆到用VISTA系统的电脑室。体育馆比市中心的旧小学大好几倍——后来在创收活动中我发现，这大体育馆真有用场。

加拿大的公立中小学，完全靠政府拨款，从日常运营开支到校车服务，经费相当充裕。这所小学开学后，搞了几次"创收"，名正言顺是募钱建室外游乐场。并且着重声明：学校旁边的儿童游乐场，是政府搞的设区项目，我们还要建学校自己的。看样子这种单双杠、秋千、独木旱桥和沙坑等组成的场地，建设费用颇大，小学必备，教育局经费还不列项，于是学校决心自立更生。

第一次筹款活动，是九月份在学校操场上。十几种大型娱乐设备，什么微型高尔夫、套圈之类，孩子们凭游戏票去玩儿，游戏票一元钱一张。现场出售比萨饼和饮料，价格比市面稍贵。游戏票和食品饮料的收入，就是创收的来源。金秋时节的傍晚，学校操作场上热热闹闹折腾了一晚上，许多有小学生的家庭合家出动，积极消费。这次创收颇有成效，收入一千多加元。



为了筹备这场活动，学校从一个月前就开始张落。娱乐设备和食品饮料，都是商家赞助的，现场工作的义工由家长和附近中学的学生担任。除了鼓励孩子们多买游戏票以外，家长还尽量多提供一些赞助品充当游戏的奖品，特别是一些从事商业工作的家庭，比如开餐馆的提供餐券。赞助的商品和开销可以抵税，中学生做义工完成了教育大纲规定的义工时数。

这场筹款，还起到课外教育的目的。消防局开来一台设备齐全的大消防车，既是活动项目之一，又起到防火宣传目的。孩子们争先恐后往车上爬，消防员认真讲解设备的作用，顺便渗透各种消防常识。警察局来了个全副武装的女警官，在现场到处和孩子互相敬礼，模仿自行车在街上行驶遇到交通状况的情景，"成功通过"的孩子会获得女警官发放的贴纸。

到第二年开春，学校后面多出来一个游乐场。不过学校宣布，设备还不够多，要举行别一种筹款活动：免费电影之夜。

免费电影之夜安排在一个周末，欢迎以家庭为单位参加。电影在学校的体育馆放映，自由进场。学校在门口出售玉米花和矿泉水，一包玉米花一元五角，差不多有市场上同等价格玉米花一半多。小瓶水卖五角一瓶，也是翻倍的价格。家长和孩子们踊跃购买。



上图是提前一星期发放的广告单，印着电影的名字，注明时间地点。里面的注意事项，有趣的三条：一是欢迎大家自带小食品入场，但不要带玉米花和果汁，这个显然是保证创收效果。二是可以穿睡衣并且带毯子和枕头——后来我才明白是怎么回事。三是本次活动不是由学校照管的，本校学生参加应由十八岁以上成年人陪同。加拿大处处律条森严，学校招来大批孩子又不监护，事先要声明免责。

电影是一部很热闹的无厘头风格的儿童科幻片《间谍小子》SPY  KIDS。体育馆里摆了大批折椅，但场子前半部空着：大批的孩子，穿着睡衣，把毯子毛巾被什么的铺在地上，搂着枕头，看电影！这种场面好玩儿极了，免费电影之夜，原来又是个自由自在的夜晚。

创收，创意。
